1. First iterations

After trials of the previous term, I’m curious to see where paper experiments might take me after the last trials I put on my GCD page.

This time, with insights from the previous terms, when I was either overthinking my project to the extent that it got stuck, or focusing on the writing component so much that it became a project in itself, I decided to focus on the method/technique and almost mindlessly play with it to see what comes out.

For now I know that there will be a few aspects important to me in my work:

  • paper
  • movement
  • time
  • words

The first week, I wanted to dedicate my time to loose experiments with paper, and then to writing some reflections or ideas that came to my mind on the way.

To start off and keep my hands busy, I reached for Folding techniques for designers by Paul Jackson. Interestingly, this book covers, as the title says, ways of folding (not modeling or origami), and focuses on absolute basics, as they are the most flexible and provide the most room for creativity.

So, having some base to work and play with, in each iteration, I was trying to look at the shape from the perspective of reading, sequence and movement. As text, sometimes I used a quote from the book, sometimes simply numbers to focus only on the sequence.
