4. Project 1. Bingo Instagram account

And so I made an Instagram account.

My biggest perhaps not inspiration but what influenced my way of thinking was Joseph Campbell’s ‘Myths to Live By’. He starts his lecture from describing the evolution of our model of the universe from the point of view of our need for the stories about reality that give us a sense of certainty. He also points out that beliefs were presented by religions as truths, and nowadays what we believe in are also assumptions. Behind every idea of what our world actually is, there is the same intention of trying to understand it, describe it, and bring possibly close to truth.

I wanted to put different concepts on the same level, and so each white post is a brief description of one model or theory. On black posts I placed quotes about the speculative nature of science and about our needs for stories, dreams and beliefs. You can also find old drawings of different systems.

To add another layer, I combined those gathered quotes and concepts with my own collages of speculative worlds, which I think makes you consider those theories from perspective of the depicted parallel worlds rather than our reality. From even bigger distance, and that makes them even more insignificant and alike.

Mixed all together it might create an impression for example of the sense of reality slipping from under our feet, as you realise that we know nothing, that nothing is certain.

I probably drew a little from Neuralink’s website visual language (https://neuralink.com). The creative director, Casey Martin, explains their approach:

We arrived at what ultimately became the brief: design a brand that’s routed in traditional science, while still pointing towards the unlimited possibilities of their product. Ultimately our goal was to find a balance between traditional science textbooks and the seemingly limitless possibilities of the Link.

In the end it meant combining old realistic drawings from textbooks with very simple, colourful graphics.

And similarly here, I wanted to contrast vintage, outdated drawings with the feeling that in their times they were just as forward thinking as multiverse theories nowadays. And the other way, this combination makes you realise that at some point speculative science theories will be outdated and old school too.
