Investigate final crit
Some notes on the feedback from the group:
- this is macro context, explore something more in detail, ex. one user group, part of day, why people are going in this direction? where are they going? what do they wear? who are they?
- combine people with sounds
- diversify typography of conversations – different fonts for different people? tone?
- combine sounds into a representation of the place
- reference: Mitch Miller dialectograms
- how do you bring the person to life?
- how do you illustrate the conversations?
- link between pace of walking and speed of talking?
It seems that you can’t really get the feel of the space from the gathered data, you can’t imagine those people passing by. It feels very distant, and too general, too simplified. I thought it would be better to narrow down my focus just to sounds and conversations and use them to tell the story of this place.
Soundscape
At first, I gathered the analysed sounds into a soundscape of the place, along with the graphic representation of its rhythm and melody. The focus here is not on the conversations but mainly on all the other sounds in the background.

Conversations
After the tutorial I had the impression that the written down bits of conversations lacked some context and that’s why they couldn’t speak to one’s imagination. But how could you illustrate them? How to bring them to life?
I started asking myself what is the context for those words? What do these people do as they speak? In what situations? Who are they talking to? What do they hear?What do they see when they walk along the passage and look up? Or down? Or how does it look like from a child’s perspective? What is the experience of being there? What is the shape of this space? How do they move? Walk? Run? Cycle? On a scooter? What gestures do they make? Holding hands? A phone? A kid? A shopping bag?
